Si, me encantó el palacio. Lo único que diría es que la exposición de Tutankamon que es interesante pero no espectacular, podría haberse incluido en la entrada de Palacio.

What makes Liria Palace a must-see?

Liria Palace Gardens in Madrid with manicured hedges and historic architecture in the background.

It’s Madrid’s best-kept secret

While most visitors flock to royal palaces and popular plazas, few know that tucked away in the heart of Madrid is the private residence of the House of Alba. It’s a hidden gem where centuries of history, exquisite art, and aristocratic charm come together under one majestic roof.

Not your average royal digs

Liria Palace isn’t just another palace with chandeliers and gilded mirrors (though yes, they've got plenty of those too). It’s a real, lived-in family home—well, royal family home—so you’re getting the real deal here. Each room tells a personal story, complete with priceless furniture, historic portraits, and charming artifacts collected over centuries.

Art collection that rivals museums

Who needs a trip to the Prado when you’ve got Liria Palace tickets? Original masterpieces by Goya, Rubens, and Velázquez are just a few to name. The palace is like a gallery secretly hiding inside a palace, minus the velvet ropes.

From quiet palace to living history

Unlike grand state palaces bustling with crowds, Liria has an intimate, almost exclusive feel. You’ll walk its quiet hallways, explore fully furnished rooms as they’ve been for generations, and hear quirky stories about dukes and duchesses past. Did we mention Napoleon Bonaparte even has a presence here?

That garden, though…

Stepping out into the palace gardens feels like hitting the pause button. With classical sculptures, perfectly manicured greenery, and just the right amount of royal flair, it's the kind of place you'll want to sit with a book—or pretend you're starring in your own period drama.

Things to know before booking your tickets

  • Liria Palace is where history and art high-five in velvet-draped hallways. Whether you’re there for the standard entry ticket or upgrading to the 90-minute Spanish guided tour, one thing’s for sure: you’re in for a treat.
  • The cherry on top? Every ticket comes with a digital audio guide featuring Joana Vasconcelos. Yes, the internationally acclaimed artist herself—expect wit, wisdom, and maybe a saucy secret or two.
  • Speaking of Joana, don’t miss the Flamboyant temporary exhibition that’s equal parts fabulous and thought-provoking. If you like your art with a splash of sass and a dose of dazzle, this one’s for you. Access it from 10am to 8pm, with last access at 6:30pm. However, it closes by 3pm on Monday.
  • If you’re planning to make it a royal week, check out the combo ticketsRoyal Palace of Madrid, the Royal Collections Museum, or even a panoramic tour with a top-rated operator. The best part? You don’t have to cram it all in one day—use the combo tickets whenever it suits your schedule.

The grand staircase

Cue the royal soundtrack. This cinematic sweep of marble and gold is your dramatic entrance into the palace. Think Bridgerton meets Almodóvar. Commissioned in the 18th century and restored with loving precision, it sets the tone for the visual opulence throughout.

The throne room

Heavy is the head that wears the crown—but their chairs are nice. Dripping in pomp and pageantry, this gilded beauty once hosted royal audiences and high-stakes whispers. It is a slice of living history, where Spain's past power players made grand decisions under grander ceilings.

Library

Where silence is golden—and so are some of the book covers. With thousands of rare volumes, including a first edition of Don Quixote, prepare to be literarily awed. Lined with towering wooden shelves and antique globes, it’s also home to maps, manuscripts, and letters that have survived centuries.

The ballroom

If those crystal chandeliers could spin gossip, they would. This is where 19th-century nobility waltzed, wooed, and whispered. The parquet floors still carry echoes of centuries-old soirées, and if you look closely, you’ll spot gold-leaf detailing and intricate crown moldings.

The palace gardens

Need a breather? Step outside into curated calm. Designed in neoclassical style and studded with historic fountains and leafy alcoves, it's easy to see why aristocrats once strolled here, plotting politics or just the next dinner party.

The portrait gallery

This isn’t your average family album. Explore centuries of painted dukes and duchesses and dramatic fashion choices. With masterpieces by artists like Goya and Rubens and expressions that range from royal swagger to subtle shade, each face is part of the Alba family's historic timeline.

The chapel

Small in size, big on serenity. Intricate stained glass and religious art make this an oasis of peace in a palace buzzing with stories. Built as a private place of worship, its ornate altar, wooden pews, and quiet reverence offer a deeply personal glimpse into the spiritual lives of one of Spain's most influential families.

The viewpoint terrace

Sip in the skyline. With sweeping views of the city, the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, and more. Especially striking at sunset, this terrace offers a rare chance to see the city from a perspective only nobility once enjoyed. A breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively.

Flamboyant: Joana Vasconcelos exhibition (on till July 31)

Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos brings bold and bright sculptures to the palace. From monumental high heels made of pots and pans to crocheted creatures that feel half-fantasy, half-feminist statement. This temporary exhibition offers a modern twist to Liria’s old-world charm—a mashup that somehow works perfectly.

Tips to make your Liria Palace visit hassle-free

  • Liria Palace guided tours are timed. You won’t be able to explore at your own pace, so follow your assigned group and soak in the details as you go—you can’t circle back.
  • The audio-guided tour (available in multiple languages with all the tickets) can be played using a simple QR code. You’ll thank yourself if you plug in your headphones—better audio quality, less distraction, and hands-free comfort.
  • Your visit covers multiple floors and rooms, and stops are standing only. There are no rest breaks until the end, so wear supportive shoes and be prepared to be on your feet the entire time.
  • There’s a Goya... but don’t blink. The interiors house original works by Goya, Rubens, and more. But it's easy to miss them if you're not paying attention, as they’re integrated into the décor, not standalone pieces.
  • Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, the former Duchess of Alba, lived at Liria Palace and held over 40 noble titles (more than Queen Elizabeth). Make sure to look for her portraits or ask your guide for more tidbits about her.
  • Liria’s library has over 18,000 historical volumes, including Christopher Columbus’ very first letter from the New World. You can't read them, but knowing this rare archive is right there adds major historical weight to your visit.
  • The palace enforces a quiet, almost contemplative atmosphere. Whispered conversations are allowed, but avoid phone calls and noisy children if you're traveling in a group.
  • Visit in spring or autumn for the views. While interior visits dominate the experience, spring flowers around the palace entrance and milder weather make waiting or taking photos outside more pleasant and picturesque.
  • Last admission is at 6:30pm, and it's usually quieter than midday. Perfect if you enjoy slower-paced cultural visits or want better interior shots without crowds.
