A vast collection of works from a variety of eras and genres of art. Spent four hours and still could've spent another four. The cafe is in a nice setting but the food was not very good. Unfortunately we did not get to participate in the guided tour in English as we were directed to the timed Munter exhibit on accident and missed the tour. The museum concierge was very apologetic, accepting blame, and said she would have Headout give us a refund. However, we have yet to receive the refund - going on 4 days now.

Journey through 700 years of art history

Travel from medieval masters to modern icons in one incredible collection! With nearly 1,000 artworks spanning the 13th to 20th centuries, you'll witness the evolution of Western art through the Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism, and beyond, all under one roof.

Find paintings that the Prado doesn't have

Madrid's other museums are incredible, but they have gaps. The Thyssen plugs them all: German Expressionists, Dutch Golden Age scenes, English portraits by Caravaggio, Rubens, and Titian. It's like the baron who built this collection knew exactly what Spain was missing and went hunting for it.

See American art that barely exists in Europe

Ever wondered why European museums rarely show Edward Hopper or Georgia O'Keeffe? Because most don't have them. The Thyssen does, and it's weirdly refreshing to see American perspectives hanging in a Madrid palace, which makes you realize how different their artists saw the world.

Catch experiments that changed everything

This is where you see artists breaking rules. Kandinsky ditching recognizable shapes, and Mondrian reducing everything to lines and primary colors. These aren't just pretty paintings; they're the moments when art said "forget everything you know" and started over.

Enjoy a perfectly sized, walkable collection

Experience art without museum fatigue! The Thyssen's thoughtfully curated collection is intimate enough to explore in a few hours yet rich enough to satisfy any art lover, making it the perfect complement to Madrid's larger museums.

Things to know before booking your Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum Tickets

  • The Thyssen-Bornemisza is one of Madrid’s “Golden Triangle of Art” museums, and tickets here can sell out quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. Booking online in advance gives you more flexibility with time slots and tour options, and helps you skip the on-site ticket queues.
  • If you’re short on time or simply want to explore at your own pace, a standard entry ticket gives you direct access to the museum’s permanent collection, from Renaissance classics to modern masters.
  • Want a deeper dive? Choose the audio guide option. It’s available in several languages and adds rich storytelling and expert commentary as you move through the galleries.
  • For a more immersive visit, join a guided tour in English or Spanish. You’ll explore the highlights with an expert guide who brings the artworks, artists, and eras to life through fascinating context and anecdotes.
  • If you’re planning to explore more of Madrid’s art scene, the Arte 3 Museum Pass is a smart pick. It grants entry to the Thyssen-Bornemisza, Prado, and Reina Sofía Museums at a discounted rate.
  • And for those who love combining art with city views, go for the combo ticket with the panoramic bus tour. It’s a perfect way to pair world-class art with an open-top sightseeing experience across Madrid’s top landmarks.
  • Entry tickets grant access to the museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions unless stated otherwise. Separate tickets may be required for special events or evening programs.

The Annunciation Diptych by Jan Van Eyck

This two-part painting is special because it’s painted in shades of gray, making it look like a stone sculpture. It shows the angel Gabriel telling Mary she will have Jesus. Even though it's small, the details are incredible.

Harlequin with a Mirror by Pablo Picasso

This painting shows a character called Harlequin, who often appears in Picasso's art. He's holding a mirror, which makes you think about looking at yourself. It uses bright, bold colors and shapes, typical of Picasso's style.

Hotel Room by Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper’s Hotel Room, painted in 1931,  shows a woman sitting alone in a simple hotel room. The light and shadows make it feel quiet and a little lonely. It's a snapshot of a private moment.

Claude Monet's Charing Cross Bridge

Monet was famous for painting and showing how light changes what we see. This painting shows a bridge in London, with lots of attention to how the light reflects on the water and in the air. The detail makes it feel like you’re a part of the painting.

Vincent Van Gogh's Les Vessenots in Auvers

This painting shows the countryside near where Van Gogh lived at the end of his life. It's full of vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes. It shows his deep connection to nature and his strong emotions.
