Santiago Bernabéu renovation

Between 2019 and 2023, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium underwent a groundbreaking renovation that completely transformed its appearance and capabilities. With a total investment of over €1.1 billion, the project was financed through a series of long-term loans approved by the club’s board and Madrid’s city authorities. Despite delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, construction continued in phases to allow the team to keep playing home matches during most of the work.

One of the standout features of the renovation is the addition of a massive retractable roof, which now covers the entire stadium and allows events to be held regardless of weather conditions.

Alongside this, Real Madrid introduced an innovative retractable pitch system, where the natural grass surface can be stored underground in a high-tech, climate-controlled facility known as the hypogeum. This ensures optimal pitch conditions and enables the stadium to host a wider range of non-football events, from concerts to e-sports competitions.
